Lactones of the formulµ wherein R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> both represent hydrogen or one of R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> represents hydrogen and the other represents a methyl group, n is 0, 1, 2 or 3, r is 0 or 1, m is 1 or 2, p is 0,1 or 2, and one of the positions indicated by the dotted lines in the formulµ of the mono-unsaturated laotones is occupied by a double bond are prepared by cleaving a peroxide of the formula in which R<SP>1</SP> represents hydrogen, a hydrocarbon radical, an acyl group or a group of the formula: in which R<SP>2</SP> is a group of the above formula, provided that when both R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are groups of the above formula they are identical.
