Abstract

811,443. Cast-coated paper. WARREN CO., S. D. Aug. 16, 1955, No. 23610/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 96. Paper is coated with e.g. casein or soya protein and, e.g. with clay, blanc fixe, calcium carbonate, talc, titanium dioxide, or ultramarine, &c., e.g. with some synthetic rubber latex, glue, starch, or polyvinyl alcohol, there being present at the surface of the coating, while it is being finished by pressing it in a plastic condition against a highly polished heated drum &c., a reaction product of the hydrophilic swellable protein and a watersoluble amine having a boiling point above 150 C. and a basic ionization constant between 10<SP>-3</SP> and 10<SP>-7</SP>, the amount of amine being sufficient to maintain the pH value at 7.3 to 9. The paper may be dried and re-wetted, e.g. with aqueous formaldehyde immediately prior to finishing. The amine may be applied as a pool of aqueous solution in the nip between the coated paper and the heated drum. The amine used may be mono-, di-, tri-, or N-ethylethanolamine, N-hydroxyethyl propylene diamine, diethylene triamine, or triethylene tetramine, &c. An example mentions clay, converted starch, dyestuff, and a fungicide, applied as a surface filling before the coating mixture.
