Abstract

441,347. Paper for towelling etc.; preserving glue. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-, 28, Southampton Buildings, Chancery Lane, London.-(Brown Co. ; Berlin, New Hampshire, U.S.A.) Nov. 10, 1934, No. 32452. [Class 96] Absorbent paper for towelling &c. is given high wet-strength without much loss of absorptivity by impregnating it with a dilute solution of albuminous adhesive, e.g. not more than 5 per cent of glue, gelatine, &c., and drying so as to leave thin adhesive coatings on the fibres. The adhesive may be prepared from bones, fish, hides, casein, blood albumen, &c. and may be tanned, e.g. using ¢ per cent of formaldehyde, alum, or tannic acid in a 5 per cent adhesive solution, the soaked paper being passed between squeeze rolls which allow the paper to retain its own weight of solution. A little softening material, e.g. glycerine, soap, alcohol, or preservative, e.g. sodium orthophenylphenate, may be used ; or the paper may be softened by a doctor-blade. The paper, which may be crÛped and /or embossed, may be made from kraft pulp and may be impregnated before complete drying in the paper-machine.
