[Classes 96 and 140] A web W of thin, absorbent, felted, cellulosic material such as tissue paper is impreg. nated by means of a hollow, apertured roll 23 dipping in impreg. nating material in a container 20, the areas registering with the apertures 25 being left unimpregnated. Solutions or emulsions oi wax, paraffin, cellulose esters, protein such as glue or casein insolubilized with formaldehyde, rubber latex, natural or synthetic resins, rosin size, starch, glucose, or sodium silicate may be applied. One or more impregnated plies may be united to one or more unimpregnated plies, e.g. by local compression along criss-cross lines. The products may be used for towels, handkerchiefs, or diapers.
