Abstract

937,934. Paper. ROHM & HAAS CO. Dec. 31, 1959 [Jan. 6, 1959], No. 44423/59. Class 96. Porous paper prepared wholly or in part from natural cellulose fibres has its wet strength increased by impregnation, e.g. by dipping, of the substantially dry paper with an aqueous dispersion consisting essentially, i.e. substantially entirely, of a water-insoluble copolymer dispersed in water, and drying and heating of the impregnated paper. The copolymer contains a minor proportion of units corresponding with at least one of: maleic acid, aconitic acid, and their anhydrides, salts and partial amide salts; the balance of the copolymer consists of units corresponding with at least one of: acrylonitrile, vinyltoluene, and esters of acrylic and methacrylic acid. The copolymer is dispersed throughout the mass of the paper. The salts which may be used in the polymer are those of alkali metals, ammonia, or watersoluble amines. The paper used may be sized, e.g. with rosin and papermaker's alum, and may contain also artificial fibres, e.g. of cellulose rayon, cellulose acetate, nylon, polyethylene, terephthalate, acrylonitrile copolymers, copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, or copolymers of vinylidene chloride with vinyl chloride or acrylonitrile, and may be tissue paper or creped. They may subsequently be impregnated with aqueous dispersions of gums, resins, pigments and fillers.
