Abstract

An article comprises non-collagenous fibres that can be wet-assembled and 0.1 to 5% of collagen distributed throughout the non-collagenous fibres and binding them together. The article may be a fibrous sheet or a yarn. The non-collagenous fibres may be wood-pulp fibres or short rayon staple fibres. The collagen may also be present in fibrous form. The article may be made by dispersing the non-collagenous fibres in water, adding an aqueous dispersion of collagen at a pH of 3 to 5, precipitating the collagen on to the non-collagenous fibres, e.g. by adding ammonia to raise the pH to 7, and removing the aqueous medium. When making a yarn, the dispersion of non-collagenous fibres may be caused to flow through a narrow channel to align the fibres, the dispersion of collagen is added to the flowing aligned fibres and precipitated by raising the pH, and the non-collagenous fibres with collagen precipitated thereon are removed from the flowing medium in the form of a yarn and dried. Sheets may be made on a Fourdrinier machine, by feeding to the headbox separately prepared dispersions of collagen and non-collagenous fibres, with enough ammonia to precipitate the collagen. In the Example, collagen from which the elastin has been removed is swollen in an acid solution containing cyanecetic acid to form a dispersion of fibres. Separately rayon fibres are dispersed in water. The two dispersions are mixed in a container with a fabric bottom and the pH raised to 7 by adding ammonia. The collagen precipitates and the water is drained off. The fibrous mass is air-dried and removed from the fabric. The product may be used as a wiping cloth or absorbent dressing.
