Abstract

[Also in Division B2] A cellulose-containing paper is prepared from an aqueous pulp free from groundwood and unbleached fibres and free from rosin size, and is coated with a composition comprising a starch product. and a water-soluble salt of a copolymer of a monovinylidene aromatic hydrocarbon and a maleic monomer which is maleic acid, maleic anhydride or a half ester of maleic acid, the paper having an extract pH (according to TAPPI T-435m-52) of at least 4.5. The hydrocarbon may be styrene or an aryl-substituted alkyl styrene. The water-soluble salt of the copolymer may be the sodium or ammonium salt. The pulp slury from which the paper is formed may also include a ureaformaldehyde resin, a melamine-formaldehyde resin,- or a polyalkyleneimine. The starch product may be unmodified starch, enzymeconverted starch, hydroxyethylated starch, oxidised starch, or a cationic starch. The pulp may also contain inorganic pigments, e.g. CaCo 3 , clay, TiO 2 , and also synthetic fibres, e.g. polyacrylonitrile, polyamide, polyester or regenerated cellulose fibres.
