Abstract

1533575 Sizing paper r NATIONAL STARCH & CHEMICAL CORP 18 June 1975 [31 July 1974 23 Dec 1974] 26000/75 Headings DIP and D2B A method of sizing paper products during a paper making operation comprises the steps of (1) forming a sizing emulsion comprising a specified higher organic ketene and a polyoxyalkylene alkyl or alkyl-aryl ether or mono- or di-ester in specified proportions and (2) intimately dispersing the emulsion within the paper stock or web prior to its passing through the drying stage of the operation. The size may be added to paper stock with or without prior emulsification in water. A cationic size retention aid e.g. a cationic starch derivative or a cationic synthetic resin may be added to the stock prior to drying. Alternatively an aqueous emulsion of the size mixture may be sprayed onto the formed paper web prior to drying. The treated paper may be cured by heating at 80-150‹C for 1-60 minutes. The process confers resistance to acid and alkali attack. The ketene is preferably a ketene dimer, many of which are specified.
