633,441. Flame-proofing cellulosic materials. McLEAN, A., MARRIAN, S. F., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. June 11, 1947, No. 15341. [Class 140] Cellulosic materials are flame-proofed by impregnating first with a polyethyleneimine and then with both a quaternary ammonium compound having at least one hydrocarbon radicle which has a long chain of more than 8 carbon atoms and an aqueous solution comprising one or more of the acid esters of orthophosphoric acid and inositol, pentaerythritol, or a polypentaerythritol, wherein all the hydroxyl groups of the inositol, pentaerythritol, or polypentaerythritol are esterified by orthophosphoric acid radicles. The quaternary ammonium compound may be a quaternary ammonium base, used in such an amount as will neutralize 5-25 per cent of the acidity of the substituted phosphoric acid. In examples cotton cloths that have been impregnated with an aqueous alcoholic solution of polyethyleneimine and dried are treated (1) with cetyl trimethyl ammonium hydroxide in water, dried, and then with crude pentaerythritol tetra-orthophosphate ; (2) with dicetyl piperidinium hydroxide and the same phosphate ; (3) with a solution prepared by adding an aqueous solution of cetyl trimethyl ammonium hydroxide to an aqueous solution of crude pentaerythritol tetra-orthophosphate and then adding alcohol and heating until the precipitate that has formed dissolves ; (4) as in example (1) to (3) using phytic acid instead of pentaerythritol tetra-orthophosphate ; (5) with an aqueous solution of cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide and, after squeezing with blotting paper, with an aqueous solution of crude pentaerythritol tetra-orthophosphate.
