Abstract

Sized paper is made by adding to a dilute paper pulp suspension, 0.1 to 5 per cent. on the weight of the fibres, of the condensation product of 1 to 2 mols. of epichlorhydrin with 1 mol. of one or more aliphatic amines containing at least 16 carbon atoms, adding the filler, if any, forming the paper, and heating at a pH higher than 7, for one to three minutes to dry the paper &c. In an example (1) to 103.7 gms. of an octadecylamine in 150 c.c. of ethanol was added 13.7 gms. of hydrochloric acid, the solution was heated to 70 DEG C., and 68.6 gms. of epichlorhydrin added slowly while cooling below 70 DEG C. The mixture was then boiled under reflux for four hours, the solvent distilled off, and the product stripped under partial vacuum.
