Abstract
Salts of phenoxyalkylcarboxylic acids free from the odour of phenol are obtained by removing unreacted phenols by adding to the solution or suspension of the salts a mineral acid in an amount sufficient to liberate the phenol or phenols from their salts without decomposing the salts of the phenoxyalkylcarboxylic acids, and subjecting the product to steam distillation when the phenoxyalkylcarboxylic acids have been prepared either by reacting a phenol with an a -chloroalkylcarboxylic acid containing not more than four carbon atoms in the presence of aqueous alkali, or by reacting equimolecular proportions of a phenol and an a -chloroalkylcarboxylic acid as defined above and then adding a further quantity of the acid with a slight excess of alkali. In examples, unreacted phenol or phenols are removed by the addition of hydrochloric acid and then steam distilling the aqueous solution or suspension obtained in accordance with Specification 573,510 of (1) mixed sodium methylchlorophenoxyacetates; (2) sodium phenoxyacetate, and (3) sodium 2 : 4 - dichlorophenoxyacetate.
