Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an additive for paper making, having improved shelf stability, suitable for high-speed paper making, etc., having no troubles in waste water treatment, by quaternizing a carbamoyl lower alkyl starch Mannich derivative with a quaternizing agent under specific conditions.
CONSTITUTION: A carbamoyl lower alkyl starch Mannich derivative is adjusted to a pH of about 6W8 in the presence of a water-soluble inorganic ammonium salt (e.g., ammonium chloride, etc.) in an aqueous medium by adding an inorganic acid (e.g., phosphoric acid, etc.) to the derivative, and quaternized by adding an quaternizing agent (e.g.m dimethyl sulfate, etc.) and a lower alcohol (e.g., methanol, etc.) simultaneously, or adding the lower alcohol immediately after the addition of the quatenarizing agent, to give the desired compound having a molecular weight corresponding to a reduced viscosity of about 0.1W2.5. About 0.1W5pts.wt. of this compound based on dried pulp weight of raw material for paper making is blended with the raw material pulp in any arbitrary process before being fed to the paper making machine, and the blend is subjected to paper making in a pH of about 6W10.
