Abstract

A process for preparing a laminate, comprising impregnating a fibrous sheet material with a urea-modified melamine-formaldehyde resin solution, the solution of which has: (a) a urea content of between 4% and 50% by weight, based by weight of urea plus melamine; (b) a molar ratio of formaldehyde to the three NH2 groups from urea or melamine, ranging from 1: 1 to 2.5: 1; and (c) a water-soluble inorganic silicate, in an amount corresponding to 0.2-1.4% by weight of SiO2 based on the total weight of said solution; Dry the impregnated fibrous sheet and apply the dry sheet to a substrate at elevated temperature and pressure to form a laminate therewith.
