Abstract

Urea-contg. resins are used in mixts. contg. melamine and silicate, to give laminates from paper or fibre matl. with similar surface qualities to those produced by melamine itself, The mixts. are cheaper, the silicate can be added with less precautions, and the soln. will keep longer before use. The prefd. mixts. contain 25-40% wt. of urea (w.r.t. urea plus melamine), and 0.4-0.8% wt. of SiO2 (in the whole soln); the pref. molar equiv. of formaldehyde per three NH2 gps. in urea and melamine is between 1.5:1 and 1.81: if the laminate is not to be bent after it has once cooled, and between 1.2:1 and 1.4:1 if it is.
