Abstract

1,142,334. Aqueous phenoplast-aminoplast composition. WEST VIRGINIA PULP & PAPER CO. 27 April, 1966 [10 May, 1965], No. 18538/66. Heading C3R. [Also in Division D1] A binder for mineral fibres comprises an aqueous solution of (a) 20 to 60 parts by weight of a thermosetting resin consisting of (i) 10 to 50 wt. per cent dicyandiamide-formaldehyde and (ii) 50 to 90% phenol-formaldehyde; (b) 16 to 50 parts of the free acid form of alkali lignin and (c) 12 to 50 parts of urea, (a), (b) and (c) totalling 100 parts and (c) not exceeding 5 times (a) (i). Excess formaldehyde in the composition may be neutralized with ammonia to form hexamine and additional hexamine may be added. Antioxidants such as phosphates, borates and antimonates may be added to enhance fire resistance. The mineral fibres which may be bonded into mats with the resin may be constituted by various combinations of silica, magnesia, alumina, soda and lime. The binder may be used as an aqueous solution of pH from 7 to 10.
