Abstract
1435519 Flame-proof chipboard BORAX CONSOLIDATED Ltd 5 Nov 1973 [15 Nov 1972] 52677/72 Heading C3N A process for producing flame resistant chipboard consists of uniformly distributing a flame retardant material, which is a boron-containing compound, on the surface of wood chips having a moisture content of 0-10% by weight, e.g. 0-7%, then adding a resin binding agent to the mixture and then pressing and curing the resultant mixture to form the chipboard. The flame retardant may be boric acid, a sodium borate or a mixture of a sodium borate and boric acid. The sodium borate may be Na 2 O.10B 2 O 3 .20H 2 O, Na 2 O.5B 2 O 3 .10H 2 O or Na 2 B 4 O 7 .5H 2 O. The particle size of the flame retardant is preferably less than 60 mesh BSS, more preferably less than 120 mesh BSS. Up to 30% by weight of boric acid can be readily incorporated and uniformly distributed over the surface of the wood chips. The resin binder may be a urea-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde or melamineformaldehyde resin. The resin may contain in addition up to 5% by weight boric acid. In the specific examples the final pressing is carried out at 140‹ C. at a pressure of 350 p.s.i.
