Abstract

[Also in Division C3] A refractory heat-insulating composition comprises a refractory material which includes a siliceous component, a heat-destructible binding agent therefor, a cellulosic fibrous material and a minor proportion of a fluoride, the composition being free from any oxidizable metal. The particulate refractory material may be sand, powdered quartz, quartzite, a mineral silicate, or when used with a siliceous component, calcined dolomite, alumina, or magnesia. A fibrous refractory material such as asbestos, slag wool or rock wool may be included in amount up to 10% by wt. of the particulate refractory material. The binder may be a phenol formaldehyde resin, a urea formaldehyde resin, a furane resin, gum arabic or cellulose glue. The fluoride may be an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal fluoride, AlF 3 , MgF 2 , a complex or mixed fluoride, or a silicofluoride, borofluoride or titanofluoride. The cellulosic fibrous material is preferably newsprint or paper pulp. An oxidizing agent such as an alkali metal nitrate or chlorate may be included in the composition.
