Abstract

1,182,012. Silicate fibre containing refractory compositions. FOSECO TRADING A.G. 15 May, 1967, No. 22444/67. Headings C3N, G3P and C3R. A silicate fibre containing foamed refractory heat-insulating composition is produced by mixing a granular or powdered refractory material, silicate fibres, sufficient foaming agent to cause the composition to foam during mixing and a liquid binder which is an aqueous alkali metal silicate or a settable synthetic resin or precursor therefor, the silicate fibres being the only fibrous material present. In the example an aqueous solution of a blend of the sodium salts of alkylaryl sulphonates was used as the foaming agent and was added to a mixture of the refractory, e.g. silica flour or fine silica sand, and liquid urea-formaldehyde resin, and after foaming the silicate fibres, e.g. slag or rock wool, asbestos or an alumino-silicate, were added. Other materials suitable as the various ingredients are also specified. A defoaming agent, e.g. hexanol, may be added to the above composition which may be used to form slabs and sleeves to line the head of an ingot mould and for lining a head box for such a mould. When producing the slabs and sleeves the hardening of the alkali metal silicate may be accelerated by passing an acid gas (e.g. CO 2 , S0 2 , HCI, S0 3 ) through the composition.
