Abstract
A mould-lining or hot-top-lining composition comprises fibrous material, a binder, and at least 50% weight dust formed by ball-milling aluminium drosses and skimmings, and is free from oxidizing agents. The dross contains Al2O3, Al or Al alloy, small amounts of, e.g. Cu, Sn, Pb, Fe, Zn, Mg, and/or their compounds; also present may be AlN, silica; fluorides and chlorides of Na, K, and/or other metals; sodium aluminate and carbonate; and oxides of alloying metals. The dust particles may be -10 mesh or less; 40% may be +200 mesh or greater. There may be 2-30% wt. organic fibrous material, e.g. paper pulp or sawdust; 1-10% fibrous refractory material, e.g. asbestos, glass fibre, or rock wool; 1-10% binder, e.g. urea-formaldehyde or phenol-formaldehyde resins or silicone resin, cellulose glue, sulphite lye, or sodium silicate. Refractory material, e.g. sand, quartz, quartzite, inorganic silicate, or dolomite may be present. A surfactant, e.g. a dialkyl quaternary ammonium salt may be added. An exothermic body may be made of the composition, and may be flower-pot shaped, and may have permeability 8-12 A.F.S. units.
