Abstract
1,201,840. Discharging molten metal. FOSECO INTERNATIONAL Ltd. 16 May, 1969 [21 May, 1968], No. 24193/68. Heading F4B. In a bottom pour ladle incorporating a refractory nozzle 3 closed by a stopper rod 5, a bonded fibrous sleeve 9 is provided around the rod 5 to prevent the molten metal from penetrating and solidifying around the area 8 when it is first poured into the ladle. The bonded fibrous material is burnt,melted or softened by the contacting molten metal and when the stopper rod is first lifted is swept away by the stream of molten metal leaving the ladle. Cellulosic fibre or an inorganic fibre selected from calcium silicate fibre, aluminium silicate fibre and slag wool are suitable fibrous materials and sodium silicate, urea- and phenol formaldehyde resins, furane resins and sulphite lye are suitable binding agents to use to bond the fibrous material.
