Abstract

684,237. Compound sheet materials. MARIAN, J. Sept. 2, 1949. [Sept. 6, 1948] No. 22789/49. Class 140. Resin-surfaced composite material is made by hot-pressing on to a base material a fibrous sheet that has been impregnated with a ureaaldehyde or equivalent resin solution containing a latent curing catalyst of the kind described in Specification 682,677, [Group IV (a)], and dried at a temperature below the melting temperature of the resin. The base material may be wood veneer, plywood, wood fibre board, or an assembly of fibrous sheets of which at least every second sheet is impregnated with the same synthetic resin solution as the outer fibrous sheet, the synthetic resin in all the sheets being cured at the same time. The fibrous sheet may be paper or fabric which may be dyed or printed. Instead of urea there may be used thiourea, dicyandiamide, or a urethane, and the aldehyde may be formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, benzaldehyde, or furfural.
