Abstract

[Also in Divisions C3 and D2] Wood fibre board at least 4 mm. thick is made by (a) drying wood fibre material, which may be in the form of a porous board, to less than 4% moisture content, (b) mixing with a binding agent, and (c) pressing at above 100‹ C. The binding agent should not contain vaporizable substances other than such as are set during the compression step (c). The binding agent is preferably an unsaturated polyester dissolved in a monomer containing a reactive vinyl group, or it may be a fluid mixture of epoxy-compounds, and may contain a hardening agent or an activator. Step (c) is preferably performed at 120-150‹ C. If the fibre is to be initially in the form of a porous board, this may be made by elutriation of fibre pulp in water with subsequent straining off of the water in a perforated mould; or by spraying dry fibre pulp with an adhesive while conveying it on to a moulding plate. The fibrous material may be wood meal. The board may be laminated on one or both sides, e.g. with paper, textiles, plywood, which may be impregnated in advance with a binder, e.g. melamine resin, or foils or sheets of metal or artificial resin. The lamination of the board may be performed in the same operation as compression step (c). The boards may be plane or curved.
