Abstract

Boards or shaped articles are produced by applying heat and pressure to a mixture of a particulate organic or inorganic water-containing material and one or more polyisocyanates packed between water-containing covering layers. The latter may be of wood veneer or a cellulosic product or a synthetic material (of which many examples are given), which may be reinforced with glass fibres, or plasterboard, and if not naturally water-containing, may be pre-stored in a moist atmosphere or have an aqueous film applied thereto. The particulate material may be wood shavings, sawdust, cork dust, fibre flue, short-fibred sisal, cotton or viscose material, fibres of asbestos or glass or quartz powder. The polyisocyanates, of which many examples are given, preferably constitute between 7 and 10% by weight of the mixture. The mixture may also contain fillers, solvents, catalysts, softeners, pigments and/or fungicides.
