Abstract

A flame-proofing composition for impregnating paper comprises an aqueous polyvinyl chloride or fluoride latex; antimony oxide; a resin precondensate derived from tetrakis (hydroxyorgano) phosphonium halide, urea and formaldehyde; and optionally isopropanol. The hydroxyorgano radical may be hydroxy methyl (when halide is bromide); or hydroxychloromethyl, a -hydroxypropyl, a -hydroxyallyl, a -hydroxybenzyl, a -hydroxy-p-chlorobenzyl, a -hydroxymethylcyclohexyl, a - hydroxymethyl-4 - chlorocyclohexyl, a - hydroxypropionyl, a - hydroxybutanyl, or a -hydroxy - 4 - chlorobutanyl (when halide is chloride). Polyvinyl chloride may be in the form of a copolymer with vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride. The composition may also comprise citric acid (curing catalyst), polyvinyl alcohol or hydroxy methyl or ethyl cellulose (protective colloid), oxyethylated alkyl phenol (wetting agent), and a silicone or wax (water repellent). The impregnated paper may be dried and cured in an oven at 200-400 DEG F. for 1-10 minutes.ALSO:A flame-proofing composition for impregnating paper comprises an aqueous polyvinyl chloride or fluoride latex; antimony oxide; a resin precondensate derived from tetrakis (hydroxyorgano) phophonium halide, urea and formaldehyde; and optionally isopropanol.
