Abstract

Fabrics containing at least 10% of alkali insoluble cellulosic fibres having at least 1,8 free hydroxy groups per anhydro glucose unit are creaseproofed by (1) treating them with an aqueous solution containing a textile resin, i.e. a water-soluble, acid or acid salt catalysed material having a molecular weight of less than 1000 which will react with the cellulose molecules and which is thermosetting, and an acid or acid salt catalyst and (2) reacting them with an alkali catalysed cross-linking agent while the cellulosic fibres are in a moist, swollen condition by contact with a basic aqueous solution to produce cellulosic fibres cross-linked with linkages from 3-15 carbon atoms in length, the steps (1) and (2) being carried out in either order. Suitable textile resins are urea-formaldehyde and melamine-formaldehyde resins, methyl ethers of urea-formaldehyde resins, acrolein urea formaldehyde, cyclic ethylene urea formaldehyde, trimethylol acetylene diurea, tetramethylol acetylene diurea, methylated melamine formaldehyde, uran, triazane, tris (1 aziridinyl) phosphine oxide and epoxy resins, e.g. the diglycidyl ether of ethylene glycol, the triglycidyl ether of glycerol, and suitable acid catalysts are monoethanolamine hydrochloride, 2 amino-2 methyl-propanol nitrate, zinc nitrate, magnesium chloride and acid fluoride salts. After application of the resin the fabric may be dried and cured by heating at a temperature of 100 DEG -200 DEG C. for from 10 seconds to 30 minutes. The cross-linking agent may be diepoxybutane, the diglycidyl ethers of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, diethylene glycol or bisphenol A, the triglycidyl ether of glycerol, epichlorohydrin, 1,2 dichloropropanol-3,1,3 dichloropropanol-2, 1-3 di-bromo-propanol-2, bis(1chloro-2hydroxy-n-propoxy)ethane, 1,4 dichloro-2,3-dihydroxybutane, divinyl sulphane, bis(vinyl sulphonyl)-methane, 1-4-bis(vinyl sulphony)butane, and octadiene-1-2, 7-8-diane-3-6. The basic catalyst employed as catalyst for the cross-linking reaction, e.g. sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, sodium silicate, trimethyl phenyl ammonium hydroxide and tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide, may be applied in the form of an aqueous solution before, after or simultaneously with the cross-linking agent. The reaction of the fabric with the cross-linking agent may be effected at a temperature below 100 DEG C. Fabrics comprising cotton, linen, regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate or partially methylated cellulose fibres alone or in admixture with glycolterephthalate, nylon or polyacrylic fibres may be treated.
