Abstract

Fabrics containing at least 40% by weight of cellulose fibres, e.g. regenerated cellulose, are impregnated with an aqueous solution containing gelatin and a water-soluble condensation product of formaldehyde with a compound which contains two nitrogen atoms carrying at least one hydrogen atom, each nitrogen atom carrying hydrogen atoms being directly attached to a carbon atom which is directly attached to a further nitrogen atom, which may be one of the said nitrogen atoms, and is doubly linked to an oxygen atom or a third nitrogen atom, or a water-soluble ether thereof, dried, cured and subjected to a hot mechanical finishing operation, e.g. flat pressing, calendering, schreinering or embossing. Suitable condensation products are those of formaldehyde with melamine, urea, ethylene urea, dicyandiamide, acetylene diurein, triazones of the formula <FORM:0917359/IV (b)/1> in which R is an alkyl or hydroxyalkyl radical containing 1-3 carbon atoms or ethylene-bis-5-triazone. From 0.2-2% by weight of gelatin and 0.3-1% by weight of the condensation product may be applied to the fabric. The treating solution may also contain an acid or potentially acid catalyst, e.g. ammonium thiocyanate, and a softening agent, e.g. a melamine/stearamide/formaldehyde condensate. The fabric may be washed after curing before the application of the mechanical finish.
