Abstract

Cellulosic textile materials, e.g. regenerated cellulose, are crease-proofed and shrink-proofed and their handle is improved and water imbibition reduced by impregnating them with an aqueous solution comprising (1) a water soluble resin precondensate of formaldehyde with a compound containing at least 2 nitrogen atoms each carrying at least one hydrogen atom, each of the nitrogen atoms carrying hydrogen atoms being directly attached to a carbon atom which is itself directly attached to a further nitrogen atom and is doubly linked to an oxygen atom or a third nitrogen atom, or a water soluble ether of such a resin precondensate, (2) formaldehyde and (3) a salt of a bivalent metal from Group II of the Mendel<\>geeff Periodic Table with a monobasic acid which is ionized to the extent of at least 50% when in normal aqueous solution at 18 DEG C., e.g. magnesium chloride, the molecular ratio of metal salt to formaldehyde being at least 1:12, and then drying and heating. Suitable resin precondensates are the condensation products of formaldehyde with urea, ethylene urea, melamine, dicyan-diamide, acetylene diurein and triazones, e.g. ethylene-bis-5-triazone, methylated dimethylol urea and methylated trimethylol melamine. After impregnation with the aqueous solution a period of at least 30 seconds may be allowed to elapse before the material is dried and after drying but before curing it may be subjected to a mechanical finishing treatment, e.g. calendering, schreinering or embossing. Specification 930,132 is referred to.
