Abstract

Cellulosic fabrics, e.g. cotton and regenerated cellulose, are reacted with 2,6-dioxaspiro(3,3)-heptane of the formula <FORM:0889402/IV (a)/1> The fabric is preferably impregnated with an aqueous solution containing 1-30% by weight of dioxaspiroheptane, squeezed and then dried either at room temperature or at temperatures of 140 DEG F. or higher or heated in open width on a tenter frame at 250 DEG -400 DEG F. for about one minute to half and hour. Catalysts, e.g. oxalic acid and salts of metals of Group Ib, II, IIIb, IV and VIII of the Periodic Table with acids having the formula Ha(XY6), where H is hydrogen, a is 1-3, X is boron, silicon, sulphur or chlorine in the valence state of 3-7, Y is fluorine or oxygen and b is 4 or 6, are preferably incorporated in the treating solution in concentrations of 0,2-2% by weight.ALSO:Cellulosic fabrics, e.g. cotton and regenerated cellulose, are crease-proofed and shrink-proofed by reaction with 2,6-dioxaspiro(3,3)-heptane of the formula <FORM:0889402/IV (c)/1> The fabric is preferably impregnated with an aqueous solution containing 1%-30% by weight of di-oxaspiro heptane, squeezed and then dried either at room temperature or at temperatures of 140 DEG F. or higher or heated in open width on a tenter frame at 250 DEG F.-400 DEG F. for about one minute to half-an-hour. Catalysts, e.g. oxalic acid and salts of metals of Group I(a), II, III(a), IV and VIII of the Periodic Table with acids having the formula Ha(XY6), where H is hydrogen, a is 1-3, X is boron, silicon, sulphur or chlorine in the valence state 3-7, Y is fluorine or oxygen and b is 4 or 6, are preferably incorporated in the treating solution in concentrations of 0.2%-2% by weight. The hand or other properties of the fabric may be modified by incorporating synthetic polymer dispersions and thermosetting aminoplast resins or pre-condensates, e.g. urea-formaldehyde condensates and dimethylol-N,N1-ethylene urea, in the solution.
