Abstract

The characteristics, e.g. crease-resistance, wet-strength, shrink-resistance, handle, water repellency and resistance to attack by fungi, of natural or regenerated cellulose textiles or regenerated cellulose films are improved by treating the materials with an aqueous solution of a compound of the general formula HOCH2-NH-CX-(CH2)n-CX-NH-CH2OH wherein X = oxygen or sulphur and n=2 to 9, or with similar compounds in which one or more of the hydrogen atoms of the CH2 groups have been substituted, and an acid catalyst, and drying the materials at a temperature below 100 DEG C. The compounds are said to form cross-linkages between the cellulose chains, and no resinification takes place. In the examples specified compounds, which are applied to cotton and viscose rayon fabrics and regenerated cellulose film, are dimethylol adipamide, dimethylol suberamide, dimethylol succinamide and the compounds obtained by treating the oxidation products of fish oil fatty acids (pimelic, sebacic and azelaic acids) with ammonia to form the diamide and then with formalin to form the dimethylol derivative. Specified catalysts are oxalic, glycollic and lactic acids.ALSO:The characteristics, e.g. crease-resistance, wet-strength, shrink-resistance, handle, water-repellency and resistance to attack by fungi, of natural or regenerated cellulose textiles or regenerated cellulose fibres, are improved by treating the materials with an aqueous solution of a compound of the general formula <FORM:0698135/IV (c)/1> wherein X = oxygen or sulphur and n = 2 to 9, or with similar compounds in which one or more of the hydrogen atoms of the CH2 groups have been substituted, and an acid catalyst, and drying the materials at a temperature below 100 DEG C.
