Abstract
Paper and textile materials comprising cellulosic fibres, e.g regenerated cellulose, alone or in admixture with acetone-soluble cellulose acetate, cellulose triacetate, polyamide, polyester or polyacrylonitrile fibres, may be creaseproofed and rendered dimensionally stable or have their water inhibition reduced by impregnating them with formaldehyde and with at least 0.25 gram per 100 grams of cellulose of magnesium chloride calculated as the hexahydrate in an aqueous solution containing at least 10% by weight of water at a pH of below 5, and then curing them. The formaldehyde and magnesium chloride are applied as aqueous solutions which may contain other solvents, e.g. methanol and ethanol, providing the solution contains at least 10% by weight of water, and may be applied from the same or separate solutions. The solution preferably contains 0.5-6% by weight of formaldehyde and 0.25-6% by weight of magnesium chloride hexahydrate. The solution may also contain softening agents, lubricants and water repellents and may be adjusted to the desired pH by the addition of hydrochloric acid or caustic soda. After impregnation the treated material may be dried at 30 DEG -110 DEG C. and cured by heating to 110 DEG -180 DEG C. for from 5 seconds to 30 minutes. The material may subsequently be treated with ammonia or urea to remove unbound formaldehyde and magnesium chloride. Textile fabrics may subsequently be mercerized or "Sanforized" (Registered Trade Mark). Specification 930,132 is referred to.
