Abstract
Cellulosic texture materials, e.g. fibres, yarns and woven and knitted fabrics comprising cotton or regenerated cellulose fibres, are creaseproofed by treating them with substances capable of reacting with cellulosic hydroxy groups and causing the reaction of the substances with the cellulosic material to take place at a temperature of 10 DEG -60 DEG C at a water content of 3-10% by weight by contact with an acid or acid precursor having a pH value below 2, e.g. nitric, hydrochloric or sulphuric acid, or with an alkali having a pH value over 12, e.g. sodium hydroxide in a homogeneous mixture, i.e. a solution or emulsion, with an organic liquid or organic liquids inert to these acids or bases. The treatment may be carried out in one or two stages, the material either being treated with a solution or emulsion containing the substance capable of reacting with the cellulose together with the acid or alkali and water or being first treated with an aqueous solution containing the substance capable of reacting with cellulose, excess solution being squeezed or sucked off and the material dried and then being treated with the inert organic liquid containing the required amount of water and the acid or alkali. Substances capable of reacting with the cellulose at a pH value below 2 are formaldehyde, polyoxymethylene, acetals and compounds derived therefrom, aminoplast precursors e.g. methylol compounds of urea, ethylene urea, thiourea, dicyandiamide, guanidine, urethanes, acid amides of mono-and polybasic carboxylic acids having 1-5 carbon atoms, octadecyl ethylene urea, alkylcarboxy N-substituted melamine resin, stearylmethylamidomethylene pyridinium chloride, aminotriazines and triazones and their etherification products, and substances capable of reacting at a pH value above 12 are mono-and di-chlorotriazines, vinyl sulphone compounds and their derivatives, acryl-amide compounds and monoepoxy and diepoxy compounds, e.g. diglycide ether. Suitable organic liquids are carboxylic acids and hydroxycarboxylic acids having 1-6 carbon atoms, primary and secondary alcohols, ketones, esters, acetals, hydrocarbons and liquid aromatic compounds. The organic solvents may also contain water combining salts, e.g. calcium chloride, to maintain the desired water content. When a two-stage process is utilized fabrics may be embossed between the two stages. After impregnation the material may be stored for from 15 minutes to 18 hours in a rolled up or laid condition until the reaction is complete.
