Abstract

Textile fabrics consisting of or containing cellulose fibres are stiffened by treating them with at least one polymeric substance having at least one hydroxy and/or amine group per molecule and a reactive saturated organic compound which is the presence of an acid or basic catalyst is capable of reacting with the polymeric substance and, with the cellulose fibres of the fabric, and with a liquid comprising water and/or an organic solvent and the acid or basic catalyst at a temperature below 100 DEG C. until reaction has taken place between the polymeric substance and the reactive compound and between the cellulose fibres and the reactive compound. The polymeric substance may be a carbohydrate or derivative thereof, e.g. starch or a starch derivative, polyvinyl alcohol the hydroxy groups of which may be partially substituted, a protein e.g. gelatin, a polyamide or a polyurethane, and the reactive compound may be an N-methylol compound, e.g. dimethyloldihydroxyethylene urea, or aldehyde containing 1-10 carbon atoms when a strong acid catalyst e.g. formic, sulphuric or hydrochloric acid is used, or a compound containing two oxiran rings or two halohydrin groups per molecule, epichlorhydrin or a di halopropanol when a strong base catalyst, e.g. sodium hydroxide is used. The fabric may first be treated with the polymeric substance and reactive compound and if desired other additives, such as softeners and wetting agents, and subsequently directly or after an intermediate drying stage treated with the liquid mixture containing the catalyst. Alternatively only the polymeric substance is applied first and the liquid mixture containing the catalyst, reactive compound and any other additives subsequently applied if desired after intermediate drying. The liquid containing the catalyst may be an aqueous solution or a mixture of a water-miscible organic solvent, e.g. ethanol, with water. The fabric may be squeezed and, rolled up, wrapped in a polyethylene foil and held at a temperature below 100 DEG C until the reaction has taken place. Woven or non-woven interlining fabrics made from cotton or mixtures of polyester fibres and cotton fibres or of polyamide fibres and regenerated cellulose fibres may be treated.
