Abstract

Water soluble alkyl hydroxy alkyl cellulose mixed ethers are prepared by the action on alkali cellulose of 1 mol. of an alkylating agent, e.g. methyl or ethyl chloride or bromide, and 3 mols. of a hydroxy alkylating agent, e.g. ethylene oxide, propylene oxide or ethylene chlorohydrin. Specifications 518,072, 688,135, 710,441 and 775,913 are referred to.ALSO:Crease resistance, wrinkle resistance and non-shrinking properties are imparted to textile materials made from regenerated or natural cellulose, e.g. cotton, by treating them with an acid aqueous solution containing a water-soluble substance convertable by heat into an insoluble resinous substance and a water-soluble alkyl hydroxyalkyl cellulose mixed ether prepared by the action on alkali cellulose of 1 mol. of an alkylating agent, e.g. methyl or ethyl chloride or bromide, and 3 mols. of a hydroxyalkylating agent, e.g. ethylene oxide, propylene oxide or ethylene chlorohydrin, per glucose anhydride unit, and heating the treated materials, if desired after an intermediate drying step, to a temperature above 100 DEG C. to convert the water-soluble substance into an insoluble resinous substance. Suitable resin-forming substances are formaldehyde, glyoxal which is preferably used with an aldehyde carboxylic acid, e.g. glyoxalic acid as condensation catalyst, monomethylol urea, dimethylol urea, melamine-formaldehyde condensates, monomethylol biuret, dimethylol biuret and the reaction product in neutral to slightly alkaline medium of methylol urea and glyoxal. The treating solution may contain 1-5 grams per litre of the alkyl hydroxyalkyl cellulose. The pH value of the treating solution may be adjusted to between 3 and 5 and the solution may also contain condensation catalysts, e.g. magnesium chloride, aluminium chloride, ammonium chloride, ammonium nitrate and borate.
