Abstract

The crush resistance and abrasion resistance of pile carpets of which the pile consists of a yarn comprising at least 50% by weight of regenerated cellulose fibres are improved by treating the regenerated cellulose fibres of the pile yarn before or after incorporating the yarn in the carpet, with an aqueous solution of a swelling agent for the cellulose and then washing to remove the swelling agent. The swelling agent may be a 5-8% by weight aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, zinc chloride or sodium zincate and the treatment may be carried out at a temperature of 60 DEG -100 DEG F for 0.5-10 minutes for yarns and for 1-20 minutes for carpets. In the case of yarns, the treatment may be carried out while the yarn is in a relaxed state and after treatment the yarn may be squeezed, rinsed in water at 140 DEG -212 DEG F., stretched by 3-80% and dried at a temperature below 300 DEG F. in a relaxed state. When alkalis are used as the swelling agents the rinsing may include a treatment with a weak acid. Prior to treatment with the swelling agent the regenerated cellulose fibres may be cross linked by treating them, preferably while still in the gel state after spinning, with heat hardenable resinous materials, e.g. aminoplasts such as urea-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde, dicyandiamide. Formaldehyde, guanidine-formaldehyde and methylol-amine-epihalohydrin condensates, and formaldehyde-acrolein, acetone-formaldehyde and epoxy resins, reactant type resinous materials, e.g. partially and wholly methylated methylol ureas and their water soluble lower polymers, methylolethylene urea, and methylol 1,2-propylene urea and methylethers thereof, formaldehyde, polyaldehydes or hydroxy aldehydes. The carpet yarns may comprise regenerated cellulose fibres alone or in admixture with from 5-50% by weight of nylon, cotton, acrylic or polyester fibres. The backing may be made from linen, cotton, jute, cross-linked regenerated cellulose, nylon or polyester fibres. The treatment of carpets comprising crimped inscese rayon staple fibres is disclaimed. Specifications 796,815, 876,715, 878,655, 930,132 and 950,073 are referred to.
