Abstract
Cellulosic fibrous material, e.g. fabrics, yarns, threads or fibres of cotton, linen or regenerated cellulose are provided with a shrink-resistant, permanently stiffened, permanently glazed, permenently embossed or crease-resistant finish by treatment, in the presence of a polyester which comprises structural units connected by ester linkages and which contains free acidic groups, as the sole catalitic agent, with, as a cross-linking agent, an aldehyde or water-soluble derivative thereof which in water has a functionality of at least two and which will not homopolymerize to a water-insoluble resinous condition and hence will react with the cellulosic hydroxy groups, or with a resin precursor. Cross-linking agents specified are formaldehyde, cyclic dimethylol urea, dimethylol ethylene urea, glyoxal, an acetal of a dialdehyde with a monohydric alcohol or monoaldehyde with a polyol or hemiacetal. Resin precursors are urea-formaldehyde and melamineformaldehyde. The treating solution may have a pH of 2,5 for the cross-linking compound or 4,5 with the resin precursor. A strongly acid catalyst may be used in the presence of ammonia or other alkali. Catalysts specified are produced from an excess of sebacic, maleic, succinic or phthalic acid or anhydride and glycol or glycerol. In examples, the catalyst used is prepared from triethylene glycol and succinic acid and the reagents are (1), (2) and (3), dimethylol ethylene urea, cotton and linen fabrics being treated, squeezed to 80% expression, dried and heated for 3 1/2 minutes at 140 DEG and 150 DEG C., then washed and dried, and (4) a urea-formaldehyde condensate of molecular ratio 1,8 to 1, the pH being 4,5, and after treatment, the rayon fabric being washed, dried and cured for 2 1/2 minutes at 150 DEG C.
