Abstract
509,079. Treating textiles. ROHM & HAAS CO. May 9, 1938, No. 13749. Convention date, May 11, 1937. [Class 15 (ii)] Textiles are treated with a bath containing a resin and a tertiary amine salt or a quaternary ammonium salt containing as an N-substituent an aliphatic hydrocarbon group of at least 12 C. atoms. The resin is preferably urea-formaldehyde resin, and the quaternary ammonium salt is preferably dimethyl benzyl cetyl ammonium chloride. Fabrics so treated are softer and more flexible. In examples : (1) Dimethyl urea, diammonium phosphate and dimethyl benzyl cetyl ammonium chloride are dissolved separately and the solutions mixed ; the resulting solution is padded on to a linen fabric which is then dried and heated to 270‹ F. for 10 mins. (2) A urea-formaldehyde precondensate is mixed with acetic acid and dimethyl benzyl cetyl ammonium acetate, applied to a silk-backed rayon pile velvet, vacuum extracted, the pile brushed and the fabric heated to 300‹ F. for 5 mins. (3) Cotton fabric is impregnated with a solution containing dimethylol urea, sodium sulphate, ammonium acetate and dimethyl lauryl benzyl ammonium sulphate dissolved in alcohol and water, dried and heated to 280-290‹ F. for 6 mins. Other examples describe the treatment of a rayon fabric, woollen material, and a mixed rayon cellulose acetate crape fabric.
