Abstract

Mechanical effects are fixed upon cellulose textile fabrics, especially those of regenerated cellulose, with the aid of a water-soluble alkyl ether of a urea-formaldehyde condensation product containing, per mol of urea, more than 2 mols of formaldehyde. The ether may be obtained by reacting the condensation product of 1 mol of urea and 3 to 5 mols of formaldehyde, from which excess formaldehyde and water have been distilled, with methanol in the presence of hydrochloric acid, after which reaction the acid is neutralized and excess methanol is distilled off. The ether is applied in aqueous solution which may also contain a condensation product of formaldehyde with guanidine, biuret, dicyandiamide, benzoguanamine, acetoguanamine, formoguanamine or melamine or water-soluble ethers of these products, and/or polyvinyl alcohol or partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetates. The composition may also include a hardening catalyst, coagulatable proteins, dyestuffs, dyestuff components, pigments or softeners. In examples (1) and (2) viscose rayon fabrics are impregnated with an aqueous solution containing lactic or tartaric acid and the ether obtained by reacting methanol with the condensation product of 1 mol of urea and 4.5 mols of formaldehyde, and the fabrics are dried, chintzed or embossed and then heated to cure the resin. In examples (3) and (4) viscose rayon fabrics are similarly treated, the aqueous solution containing, in addition to the ether, a water-soluble methylol melamine containing about 2 methylol groups, a water-soluble methylol melamine containing about 4 methylol ether groups, polyvinyl alcohol, urea, calcium chloride and boric acid.
