Abstract

Cellulosic fibres, e.g. cotton and viscose rayon, are crease proofed, rendered dimensionally stable and given a reduced water imbibition by impregnating them with an aqueous solution of a water soluble nitrogen-containing resin precondensate derived from formaldehyde and a nitrogen containing compound containing at least two hydrogen atoms which are replaceable by methylol groups by the action of formaldehyde, or a water soluble alkyl ether thereof, and then subjecting the wet material directly to the action of an atmosphere containing superheated steam to convert the resin precondensate to an insoluble form on the fibres. The resin precondensate may be a condensation product of formaldehyde with urea, melamine, cyclic ethylene urea, dicyandiamide, acetylene diurein or a triazane having the formula <FORM:0942062/D1-D2/1> in which R is an alkyl radical having 1-3 carbon atoms, a hydroxyalkyl radical having 1-3 carbon atoms or an alkylene group carrying a 5-triazane residue, e.g. ethylene-bis-5-triazane having the formula <FORM:0942062/D1-D2/2> or a water soluble alkyl ether thereof formed by reaction with methanol, ethanol or propanol. 5-15% by weight of the resin precondensate may be applied to the fibres. The atmosphere of superheated steam may consist wholly of superheated steam and of a mixture of superheated steam and air containing at least 10% by volume of superheated steam, at a temperature of at least 130 DEG C. Specifications 449,243, 704,143, 713,001 and 713,002 are referred to.
