Abstract
Fabrics consisting wholly or in part of natural cellulose fibres, e.g. cotton, regenerated cellulose fibres or cellulose derivative fibres are crease-proofed by a process comprising (1) impregnating the fabric with an aqueous solution containing a salt as swelling agent for cellulose and a cellulose cross-linking agent, (2) heating and drying it, (3) further impregnating it with an aqueous solution containing a cellulose cross-linking agent and (4) heating it to a temperature of at least 130 DEG C. Specified salts used as swelling agents are zinc chloride, zinc thiocyanate, calcium chloride, calcium thiocyanate, lithium bromide and magnesium perchlorate which may be used as a 5-40% by weight aqueous solution. Suitable cross-linking agents which may be the same or different in steps (1) and (3) are acetels produced from formaldehyde and diethylene glycol, dimethylol methyl carbonate, dimethylol ethylene urea, dimethylol propylene urea, dimethylol dihydroxy ethylene urea, 1, 3-dimethylol-5-hydroxyethyl-perhydrotriazone-2, tetramethylol melamine, water-soluble etherified methylol melamine compounds, diglycidyl ethers of ethylene glycol, formaldehyde, glyosal, gluteraldehyde, epichlorhydrin, pyridinium compounds of chloromethyl ethers, divinyl sulphane derivatives, tris-(1-aziridinyl)-phosphine oxide and 1, 6-di (ethyleneiminocarbonamide)-n-hexane. Acid catalysts, e.g. oxelic acid, citric acid, magnesium chloride, zinc fluoborate, magnesium perfluoborate, ammonium sulphate and zinc nitrate, or alkaline catalysts, e.g. sodium carbonate, may be incorporated into the impregnating solutions used in steps (1) and/or (3). The heating step (2) may be carried out at 60 DEG -140 DEG C for 1-10 minutes and the heating step (4) may be carried out at 140 DEG -170 DEG C. for 1-10 minutes. After the impregnation step (3) the fabric may be dried at 50 DEG -100 DEG C. before heating step (4) and then finally washed and dried. The heating may be effected with hot air or superheated steam. Before or after crayying out any of steps (1)-(4) the fabric may be treated with a cation active, substantive or hetene type softener. If the softening agent is water-soluble it may be incorporated into the impregnating solution of steps (1) and/or (3). The aqueous solution used in step (3) may also contain polyvinyl alcohol, starch, a modified starch and a non-ionic wetting agent. After step (3) and before or after step (4) the fabric may be calendered. During the heating and/or drying step (2) and/or the heating of step (4) and/or the drying at 50 DEG -100 DEG C. prior to step (4), the fabric may be stretched in at least one direction. Specification 1,000,383 is referred to.
