Abstract

Crease-resisting properties are imparted to yarns and fabrics formed from natural or regenerated cellulosic fibres by subjecting them to two separate impregnations with materials which will give crease-resisting properties by curing or steaming, the yarns or fabrics being cured or steamed after each impregnation and one at least of the two impregnations being with formaldehyde and a suitable catalyst or catalysts to produce condensation. One of the impregnations may be with a precondensate of a cyclic ethylene urea/formaldehyde resin or with a urea/formaldehyde or melamine/formaldehyde precondensate. Examples describe the treatment of regenerated cellulose and mercerized and unmercerized cotton and linen fibres which may be finished with oleine oil, blanket finished or calendered. "Velan" (Registered Trade Mark) may be incorporated in the impregnating compositions. The Provisional Specification refers to subjecting natural or regenerated cellulosic fibres to two separate impregnations with materials which will give crease-resisting properties, with curing or steaming after each impregnation and a final finishing treatment, but in no case are the fibres subjected to more than one treatment with precondensates for forming urea/formaldehyde or melamine/formaldehyde resins.
