Abstract

Fabrics composed wholly or partly of regenerated cellulose are crease-proofed without any reduction in their abrasion-resistance by impregnation with a solution of urea-formaldehyde resin-forming ingredients containing an acidic catalyst and then heating, e.g. at 130 DEG -180 DEG C, in an atmosphere containing not less than 20 per cent of superheated steam to insolubilize the resin. Prior to the heating operation, the impregnated fabric may be subjected to mechanical finishing effects, e.g., calendering, Schreinering, embossing, glazing, pleating and mechanical shrinking. With a fabric containing nylon in addition to regenerated cellulose, the heating operation also serves to set the nylon. The catalyst may be an acid or a substance capable of becoming more acid or liberating acid during the treatment, specified catalysts being ammonium thiocyanate, ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, aluminium chloride, a mixture of calcium chloride and boric acid and aluminium acetate. When ammonium salts are employed as catalysts, natural or synthetic rubber latices may be incorporated in the reaction mixture. Water repellents such as stearamidomethyl- and octadecyloxymethyl-pyridinium chloride, the polysiloxanes described in Specification 695,703 and wax emulsions may also be incorporated in the reaction mixture. Specifications 437,642 and 449,243 also are referred to. In the first Provisional Specification, the process is said to be applicable to cotton fabrics and also to non-cellulosic fabrics and, in addition to urea-formaldehyde resins, melamine-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde and cresol-formaldehyde resins may be used. It refers also to Specifications 291,473 and 291,474 [both in Class 2(iii)]
