Abstract
To improve their resistance to creasing, fibres, yarns or fabrics consisting of or containing bast fibres are subjected to a shrinking and swelling treatment and, after drying, are impregnated with a synthetic resin precondensate solution, the resin being cured upon the materials by treatment in saturated steam containing formaldehyde vapour at a temperature of about 100 DEG C., the moisture content of the fabric not being allowed to rise above 15 per cent by weight of the untreated air-dry fabric during steaming. The steam atmosphere may contain 10 parts of formaldehyde to 100 parts, by volume, of steam. The bast fibres may be of linen or hemp, and the resin precondensate may be prepared from urea and formaldehyde or urea, melamine and formaldehyde and may contain a catalyst, e.g., sodium dihydrogen phosphate, and a wetting agent. The shrinking and swelling treatment may be effected with caustic soda and, before the resin treatment, the materials may be soured, washed, dyed and dried on a stenter. After treatment with the resin precondensate the fabric may be dried on a stenter and heated in a relaxed condition at 80 DEG to 90 DEG C. prior to being treated with stem and formaldehyde in a festoon type steamer or in a steamer in which the material passes over a number of rollers. The material is then washed, rinsed and dried on stenter. Specifications 437,642, 449,243, 452,766, 638,593, 686,330 [Group VIII] and U.S.A. Specification 2,484,598 are referred to.
