Abstract

Fibres, yarns or fabrics of regenerated cellulose are impregnated with a synthetic resin precedensate, dried and treated with saturated steam at a temperature of about 100 DEG C. in the presence of formaldehyde vapour, the moisture content of the fabric not being allowed to rise higher than 15 per cent by weight of the untreated air-dry fabric during the steaming process. The steam atmosphere may contain 10 parts of formaldehyde to 100 parts by volume of steam. The synthetic resin precondensate may be prepared from urea and formaldehyde or urea, melamine and formaldehyde and may contain a catalyst, e.g. sodium dihydrogen phosphate, and a wetting agent. The fabric may be impregnated in a three-bowl mangle and dried on an overfeed pin frame stenter at 80 DEG to 90 DEG C. to a moisture content of 3 to 5 per cent, and may also be passed over heated cylinders prior to steaming in the presence of formaldehyde at 100 DEG -102 DEG C. The fabric may then be washed, rinsed and dried on an overfeed pin-frame stenter. Specifications 437,642, 449,243, 452,766, 618,184, 686,330 [Group VIII] and U.S.A. Specification 2,484,596 are referred to.
