Abstract
Fibres, yarns or fabrics composed wholly or in part of cotton are impregnated with a synthetic resin pre-condensate and are dried and treated with substantially saturated steam at about 100 DEG C. in the presence of formaldehyde vapour and at a moisture content not higher than 15 per cent of the dry untreated fabric. In the example a cotton dress fabric is impregnated with an aqueous solution containing the precondensates of urea-formaldehyde and methylated melamine-formaldehyde, sodium dihydrogen phosphate and a wetting agent. After drying at 80 to 90 DEG C. on an over-feed pin frame stenter the fabric may be further heated and is then treated in a steaming machine with steam and formaldehyde gas at 100 DEG to 103 DEG C. The fabric is then washed and dried. The resin precondensate may be prepared from urea or a mixture of urea and melamine and formaldehyde. Specification 750,003 is referred to.
