Abstract

333,152. Fox, C. G. Feb. 4, 1929. Emulsions, making.-Bituminous emulsions are prepared by the use as emulsifying agents of soaps in association with higher monhydric aliphatic alcohols. The emulsifying agent may be prepared by reaction between caustic alkali and a liquid animal wax such as sperm oil, or by mixing the soap and the alcohol in molecular proportions. An example of the invention is as follows : 0.5 gm. of sperm oil is thoroughly mixed with 100 gms. of tar or liquefied asphalt and intimately mixed in a high speed stirrer or emulsifying mill with 100 gms. of water containing a quantity of caustic alkali equivalent to the sperm oil, the mixture being heated and subsequently stirred until cool. Protective colloids or stabilizers may be added to the emulsion. The Provisional Specification refers to the use of soapforming substances in association with the alcohols.
