Abstract

229,361. Mackay, H. A. Sept. 19, 1923. Emulsions, making.-Bituminous emulsions, for use in road-making, coal briquettes, and as a preservative coating on wood, stone, metal, felt, &c., are prepared by adding to the molten or liquid bituminous material an emulsifying agent comprising trimethylamine or other aliphatic amine or mixtures thereof and adding hot water to the mixture. Part of the amine emulsifying agent may be replaced by fatty acid, in which case an alkali or borax is also added. In examples, Mexican asphalt is melted in a jacketed tank provided with a stirrer and either a cold aqueous solution of trimethylamine, or in order oleic acid, caustic soda, and aqueous trimethvlamine are stirred in and finally hot water added. The emulsifying agent may be the mixture of fatty amines obtained by dry distilling beet sugar residues and the bituminous material may be tar. The Provisional Specification describes the use as emulsifying agent of a decomposition product of a nitrogenous animal or vegetable substance.
