Abstract

Oils are separated from the residues obtained in the destructive hydrogenation of distillable carbonaceous material by agitating the residues, at an elevated temperature, with an addition of aqueous dilute acids or aqueous solutions of acid salts until an acid reaction is obtained and some or all of the asphalt and all of the solid constituents and water separate from the oils. According to an example, the residue is added to dilute sulphuric acid during 3 hours stirring, a temperature of 90 DEG C., being maintained. After a further 2 hours stirring at the same temperature, a good separation of oil is obtained. U.S.A. Specifications 1,840,287 and 1,881,691 are referred to.
