Abstract

Aqueous emulsions, particularly of tar or other bituminous material, are prepared with the acid, as emulsifying agent or stabilizer, of an aqueous solution or suspension of albuminoids hardened with formaldehyde or other hardening agent. Such albuminoids include formaldehyde-casein products and products obtained by treating animal hair, horns, claws, or hoof refuse successively with alkali, acid and formaldehyde. The solution or suspension employed may be acid, neutral or alkaline and may comprise about 0.2 per cent of the hardened products. Examples: (1) mineral oil is emulsified with an equal quantity of water in which 0.2 per cent of waste formaldehyde-casein has been heated to 130-140 DEG C. under 80 lbs. per sq. in. pressure for two hours; (2) into a 2 per cent solution of formaldehyde-casein, made by boiling p in 2 per cent caustic potash solution, is stirred an equal quantity of petroleum residue, the emulsion being coarse or fine according to the rapidity of stirring.
