254,012. Braun, C. A., and Hay. G. S. March 25, 1925. Emulsions, making. - Emulsions having a slightly alkaline aqueous phase are prepared with the use as emulsifying agent of a small proportion of previously prepared emulsion. The process may be continuous, the substance to be emulsified and alkaline water containing the equivalent of about 0.1 per cent of caustic soda being run with stirring into a vessel containing a small amount of previously prepared emulsion and the produced emulsion being continuously withdrawn. The invention may be applied to the preparation of bituminous emulsions suitable for use in road-making, in the manufacture of coal briquettes, and in preserving or impregnating stone, wood, metal, concrete, felt, &c. The emulsification of tar and of fatty, oily, or resinous substances also is referred to, and an example is given describing the emulsification of montan wax.
