Abstract
A manganese resinate containing at least 4,5 per cent manganese is obtained by heating rosin with the requisite quantity of manganese dioxide at 300-315 DEG C. until reaction is complete, and then rapidly cooling. In operation the rosin is fused and raised to 250 DEG C., and the manganese dioxide slowly sifted in without stirring. The temperature is then raised slowly to 300 DEG C., the melt stirred, and the reaction completed at 310-315 DEG C. The product is soluble in mineral oil and may be used as a drier for varnish compositions, or be added to mineral oil together with palmitic acid an be used in the purification of used mineral oil, for instance by the process described in Specification 242,272 [Class 91, Oils &c.]. A statement of the art refers to a "fused" resinate containing up to 3\ba1/2\be per cent of manganese, and a "precipitated" resinate containing up to 7\ba1/2\be-8 per cent of manganese.
